About JT, In Her Words
Mathlete turned marketer would be the short story of my career.
The less-abridged version goes something like this…
After earning a BA in Mathematics at the University of Western Ontario and an MBA in Finance at Schulich School of Business (formerly York University), I started my career in the marketing departments of a variety of companies including The Loyalty Group and Club Monaco, later landing at Ogilvy & Mather, where I like to say I got an informal PhD in branding and company culture. Over a six-year span in Toronto and NYC, I led account management for key global accounts, including Amex, FedEx and SAP, doing everything from brand advertising to direct marketing and rode the early wave of digital.
By then, the entrepreneurial itch got very strong, and that’s when the idea of Sweetspot was born. After months of brainstorming and development, the first newsletter went out in June 2004. Sweetspot.ca grew to become the ultimate destination for Canadian women to stay in the know about lifestyle trends and happenings in their city. In July 2006, Rogers Publishing recognized this success too and purchased a stake in the company, acquiring it wholly in 2010.
If that wasn’t enough excitement, I took on a new challenge in 2011. In the early days of e-commerce, I developed the idea for a content-meets-commerce concept, eLUXE. However, the Canadian investment ecosystem wasn’t ready for it (somehow they didn’t think a woman entrepreneur could sell clothing to women online, go figure), so after three years of customer acclaim, we were unable to scale appropriately and sadly, I had to close that chapter.
Never one to give up (or have enough to retire), I took the opportunity in 2014 to take a calmer entrepreneurial path and launch Good Eggs & Co. In that early iteration, we supported a number of small- and medium-sized businesses with their growth, with a specialty in building and managing e-commerce sites.
As rewarding as that was, it also felt a bit as though I had been benched. Instead of supporting others in their brand growth, I wanted to feel the passion of building my own consumer-facing brand again. That’s when the idea of The Bullet was born.
The Bullet launched in August 2016 and quickly became Canada’s digital destination for a quick shot of daily news. The morning news blast delivered premium content directly via email, with a dose of humour to make it go down easy.
But why run one business when you can run two? Said by a true serial entrepreneur. In order to diversify our revenue stream and lean into our expertise, we spun off Newsworthy Co., a publisher and content agency, providing editorial as a service to brands.
Those businesses caught the attention of a certain Dragon, and in 2021 they were both acquired by Canadian entrepreneur, Arlene Dickinson. Along with that acquisition (and after 20+ years as an entrepreneur), I made what may have been my most challenging move and became an employee. (Gasp!)
For almost two years I led the content marketing division of Venturepark, supporting the ecosystem (agency clients and venture capital fund partners) with content strategy and execution.
It was an incredible learning experience. The greatest of all being validation that I am meant to run my own business. One where I define the culture, the guiding principles, the people I work with and the brands I support.
And I’m proud to say I’m doing it again with Good Eggs & Co. (2.0). Learn all about it here!
When I’m not being a sadistic startup junkie, I lend my expertise at numerous speaking and media engagements, act as vice chair of the board of directors for The Forum, and act as a mentor and advisor to numerous entrepreneurs. I’ve also spent some time at my alma mater teaching digital marketing.
